Maybe a Bit Too Peaceful? [open] « Thread Started on Mar 31, 2008, 8:38pm »
The palace gardens were still and quiet, the gentlest of breezes barely disrupting the flowers as they basked in the midday sun. It was a warm sort of breeze, the kind that felt more natural than forceful; more graceful than irritating. The sky was bright blue, the flowers bright shades of reds, pinks, oranges, and a myriad of other colors. From the tops of trees birds sang, from the flowers bees buzzed, doing their daily work. In one corner a dainty stone fountain tinkled in tune with the rest of the gardens. It was peaceful and it was empty, except for one small fairy sitting beside the stone fountain, barely distinguishable from the scenery.
Calanthia that day blended straight into the flowery paradise around her. She wore her flaming red hair tied up in a long ponytail that draped down to her shoulders in a graceful sweeping arch. She wore a pale pink rouched shirt and a skirt the color of a robin's egg that reached just above her ankle. Her blue eyes stood out brightly, reflecting the blue coming from the flowers and water. And, if you listened very closely, you could hear that Calanthia was humming.
She was humming to the water. With the fluxuations of her voice it rose higher and lower. Or, she pretended it was her voice. In truth she was only training her will for the water to move to travel with her voice and not movement of her hands and fingers. She wished to be able to command the water with voice, and then wane to point where she could merely will the water to do as she willed with her mind, no movement or sound needed. But for now she contented herself with humming to the water and moving it along with her hands, raising it into the air and allowing it to fall in pretty patters. She had meant merely to walk in the gardens, but the fountain sang to her mind so pretty a tune that she had to spend some time with it. She hadn't been near a good deal of water other than her hot, thick bathing water for a week now. But as it was the weekend she was free to spend time with her water.
Of course, this freedom wasn't going to last long. Later on she had to go up to her mother and father's chambers inside the court and ready herself for the ball tonight. It was a ball wasn't it? Or maybe a supper? Calanthia couldn't remember. All she knew was that it required herself to be social and gracious this evening, which warranted some alone time, didn't it? Of course, she was getting quite bored being all alone by now. She had been playing with the water for nearly half and hour. At first it had been incredibly relaxing and enjoyable, but now Calanthia was ready for something else. Impulsively, Calanthia made a scooping movement with her hand. Simultaneously a ball of water rose from the fountain a foot away from her. Balling her hand, she smoothed the water into a perfect mirror. After glancing quickly at her smiling reflection, Calanthia tossed the water into the air, brought it back down, and stopped it close to the ground. She then flung her hand around a little alcove of the garden path blocked by tall trees, planning on bringing it back to her once again.

Alenya reflected on her nightmare of a morning. She seemed to be having way too many of them lately. She wished that they would all just go away and visit someone else other then her. It would be a nice change. But then again, Alenya knew better then to hold her breath.
Nenetski was becoming more and more impossible to bare. She knew that she could not anger him because he was her ticket to the court. He would be how she got in. Her mother would teach her the ways of the court. Her mother was a smart woman. She taught Alenya most of what she knew that was politically based.
Alenya stretched out her legs. One could say that she was showing them off yet she had no one to show them off for. Her pale white skin looked even whiter next to the rose colored skirt and her black scoop neck shirt. People often said she was a little dark for a faery. Alenya would just laugh at them. She couldn't believe how people were so odd in what they considered to be normal behavior and what should be right. So she didn't have hair as light and fine as silk who cared? She didn't. Alenya laughed at her musing.
Alenya eventually notice Calanthia. She wasn't in the best of moods and Alenya wanted to cheer herself up. So she decided she would have a little fun with the water faery though her apperance most definately suggested otherwise. Alenya focused her energy on the water and raise her hand slightly and the water shot up out of the fountain.

What in bewilderness is going on? Calanthia thought wildly. On its own, some of the water had come up from the fountain, hovering close to her face. Her concentration broken, the water she had flung around the bush went away to who knew where, so shattered was Calanthia's concentration. How and why was this water floating close to her face? For a second she thought that she was imagining it, but a poke at the shimmering water proved otherwise. It wasn't well shaped, and it moved around a little bit in the air. She thought that maybe she had unknowingly flicked a hand skyward, but she knew that wasn't the case. Her hands weren't facing the water now. She wasn't controlling the water... was it controlling itself?
So, the water wasn't controlling itself, and she wasn't controlling it, and she wasn't imagining it... so what was causing the water to float at the height it was? Her mind started to turn in more practical ways, thinking of what else could control the water. Maybe an air fairy had forced air under the water and lifted it? Or perhaps another force was controlling it? Calanthia was confused, plain and simple.
She had to stop jumping to conclusions. They always got her into trouble after all. So, deciding on action instead of pondering over it any further, Calanthia looked behind her. She couldn't see anyone, but the plants were so tall and she so short that that didn't mean anything at all. So, flickering her fingers into her palm to summon the water to her, she called out for the garden to hear.
"Hello?" She meant for her voice to be indifferent and strong, yet instead it wavered. She wasn't used to having her water messed with. It was hers, always hers. No one had ever caused her this much confusion and a bit of fear at the unknown. "Who's there?" She called again, waiting for an answer.

Alenya laughed plain and simple. She had confused the poor fairy. Really what was becoming of the nobels now a days. How was the kingom to survive like this if the nobels were so easily confused and frieghtened. It made her shudder to think of all the possibilities. Never had she been so frightened of what could happen when the next generation, her generation would take power in the courts.
Alenya flicked her hand upwards once more and the water took the form of a fish. She made it flip before letting the water fall back into the fountain. She personaly loved her gift. Her magic wasn't necessarily limited to any one thing at all. No the onlyl limit was her will power and she had tons to spare. Alenya could make it look like she controlled water, earth, stone, metal, and more. Yet that wasn't the case at all. She did not have total power over them. No she just created the illusion nothing more. Anyone who knew what her magic was could see that she was not ini true control.
For example, Alenya could make fire move giving the illusion that she controlled the fire but she could not create or feed it. She was limited to the fire already in existence. She could move water, but she couldn't yet quite master the molecurlar level of the odd element to allow her to change its forms.
"Want to see what else I can do?" Alenya asked her confused company.

Fish? Now that had to be a sign of friendliness. Didn't it? Fish represented peace... water... and stupidity. At hearing a laugh behind her Calanthia wheeled back around to see another fairy lurking behind a bush. Ugh, it had been merely another daughter of the court. What was her name again? Calanthia's retention for names was rather good, but this girl's name was eluding her. She was a few years older than Calanthia, that much was sure. So she might not be a daughter of the court any more, but on her way to being a lady. Calanthia made her face pleasant, although she wanted to grimace. Her analytical skills were terrible, but she should have thought of telekinesis, as this surely was. It was too practiced, and the fish shape had ruled out air. Plus, she had heard talk of this girl, being able to move anything with her power. Calanthia fought off an inner jealous scowl. It wasn't becoming to wish you possessed another fairy's power. So, she decided on smiling at the dark headed girl behind the bush.
"Oh, hello there. I suppose I'm not used to people manipulating things I'm controlling." She said, blushing a little bit. She surely looked an idiot for the world to see. A side of her brain rallied back with the fact that Grammy had warned her to be weary of any strange occurrences lately, what with the goings on in the North. Still, this paranoia annoyed Calanthia. So, she decided instead to focus on the offer her new companion offered her.
"You're the one who can do telekinesis, aren't you?" She asked, genuinely curious as to what this girl could do. After all, it wasn't her fault that Calanthia had completely and totally missed the point with the water. So she waited on an answer, smiling at the girl in front of her.

"Bravo give the girl a hand," Alenya said clapping sarchastically. She had long since lost her faith in the courts. She thanked her father mentally for having the common sense to move his family away from the courts themselves. Otherwise Alenya shuddered to think what she might have turned out to be like. Alenya didn't know much about Calanthia, and it was obvious that Calanthia didn't know much about Alenya, but at least Alenya knew Calanthia's name. "Finally someone knows that I'm not an Elemental. Perhaps they are teaching the daughters something now a days. I wouldn't know really. I was lucky enough to get out of that particular part of society."
Alenya never really knew the whole story as to why her mother allowed her father to move them out of the courts. She had always assumed it was because her father wanted to retire. Luckily Alenya got out before she had to attend ettiqutte lessons, needle point, and whatever other pointless lessons that the courts taught the young faeries. She was allowed to develope her mind and because of it her powers flourished. Her powers were dependent on the sharpness of her mind.
Alenya had no real thoughts on Calanthia for the moment. The only ones that came to mind were the fact that one, she was a daughter of the court so therefore unaware of everything that was happening, two she was young so therefore probably niave, and three there was just something that felt so vain so you're not worth my time to Alenya. She figured that the only thing that Calanthia was thinking about right now was the impending court gathering where she would try and steal a glimpse of their prince. Alenya would be attending soley due to the fact that she would be Nenetski's other set of eyes and ears.
"I suppose that you want an introduction," Alenya said. She then went on to introduce herself the right and proper way as it was customary in court. "I am Lady Alenya Adrinina Askani. Daughter of Lord and former Court speaker Altoris Askani and his wife the Lady Aliya Adentia-Askani."

"Give the girl a hand?" Calanthia's eyebrows shot up immediately to the sky, so condescending was the tone being used by the brunette fairy. And the way she continued, Calanthia was insulted. Given, there were several empty headed girls in court. There were still those who believed girls were to be seen and not heard, but that ideology wasn't even thought of in Calanthia's family. Grammy had made sure of that, what with being one of the most successful ladies of the court. Apparently, this brunette seemed to group Calanthia in with the girls whose deepest concerns were what how best to flick their wings to portray serenity. Well, Calanthia may be well put together, but whoever took her for an idiot was sadly mistaken.
Biting back a cutting remark about her grandmother, she listened to the girl finish. As the girl rolled off her name, it hit Calanthia. The Askani family. Honestly, in a world where two names was more than enough, to have three was surely excess. Well, this girl had something to recommend her in terms of familial connections, although the strange dissenting from court that the girl had spoken of was well known and well gossiped about among the court. Did this snobby brunette know that? Calanthia wagered at a no.
Satisfied that the girl was done, Calanthia decided it was time to reply... and ignore the comment about the court daughters. Choosing her words carefully, Calanthia looked the girl in the eye and smiled.
"Well met, Lady Alenya." Here Calanthia bobbed a quick curtsy, straight to the proper depth for a peer and then straightened herself, only needing one little flap of her wings to steady herself. Wounded dignity seemed to spawn a new grace in Calanthia, and it couldn't have been a better time. "I am Lady Calanthia, daughter of the Lord Livinius and Lady Larentia, granddaughter of Lady Althea." There, all she needed to reply. Her father had served the council along with the Lord Altoris Askani in his early days, before Lord Askani retired. He was still serving there, and her mother was one of the prime Ladies in Waiting of the Queen's court. Her reference to her grandmother hopefully wouldn't be lost, as Calanthia doubted that someone with such a lineage would be ignorant of her grandmother's former position. So, standing with every ounce of dignity she could muster, Calanthia waited for Alenya to speak.

Alenya had heard things of Lady Althea. Some good some bad. Having never met Lady Althea in person. However, Alenya didn't really care all that much whom your ancestors were. It was all irrelevant to her in the long run. If you were a really terrible person Alenya couldn't care less if your grandmother was an amazing person.
"I respect your grandmother a great deal from what I've heard but am I supposed to be impressed?" Alenya asked. "I certainly wasn't trying to impress you though anyone who is impressed by whom your parents and family are surely must not be that great a judge of character. You cannot judge the child by the parents. They may have an influence but a child is not there parents. I was only being sarchastic about the whole irrelevancy that the court has to real life."
